In the Scottish Highlands, 1761:
Nineteen-year-old artist Katherine Mercer dreams of selling her paintings to help support her struggling family. Before she has the opportunity, Katherine learns she is to be sold—or practically so—given in marriage to a lord she has never met or even heard of. In return, a much-needed settlement will be made upon her mother.

Katherine’s situation goes from frightening to surreal when her husband-to-be Laird Collin MacDonald arrives with an entourage of men, each heavily armed and speaking with a thick brogue. As if leaving all she knows behind and traveling to another country with strangers isn’t bad enough, Katherine soon discovers a Scottish heritage she knew nothing of, a brother-in-law who wants her dead, and far more at stake with her paintings than she had ever imagined. Forced to turn to her reclusive husband for answers, comfort, and even her very survival, Katherine begins to unravel the mysteries of her past and what it is to love and be loved.

My Review: 5 Stars
Oh, my heart! This book is exactly why I read. There's no way that I could endure the challenges that people faced over two hundred years ago; there's no way I could be brave enough to allow myself to become married to a complete strange because of a promise made years ago; and there's no way I could survive the rugged and wild situation that these characters did. But...I get to experience it all from the comfort of my own home, in a more manageable way.

Katie was born in Scotland but was raised in England. It's interesting how she never quite fit in and now knows why. I love the gifts that she has and the way they manifest themselves throughout the story. Collin...what a contradiction! So rough, yet so tender. Swoon!

I'm not kidding when I say this kind of book is why I read. My emotions and life were completely stolen from me, as I was thrust into this story. I couldn't put it down and felt completely a part of everything about it--it's real; it's raw; it's perfectly imperfect.

Content: mild romance (kissing, some innuendo); mild-moderate violence (nothing too graphic)

Michele attributes much of what she knows about good writing to time spent with her critique group and feels that joining a critique group is the single best thing an author can to do help improve his or her writing. She has been a member of RWA and URWA, LDStorymakers, and The League of Utah Writers. Michele enjoys both attending and teaching at conferences.

When not reading or writing romance, Michele is busy with her full time job as a wife and mother. She and her husband live in Utah with their five high maintenance children and a Shitzu that resembles a teddy bear. You can find Michele on the web at and on Facebook and twitter.
