Alex Foamer is in love . . . with the untouchable singles ward heartthrob who has no idea she exists. Enter Sealey Witchburn, the manipulative, sarcastic ward executive secretary, whose scheming is Alex's only chance to catch her crush’s attention. But when Alex actually wins the bid for her dream date, she gets more than she bargained for in this surprising LDS romance based on Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid.
My Review: 4 Stars
Who hasn't had a major crush on someone who is unobtainable? Alex isn't exempt and when Sealy notices her watching Lucas, the biggest scheme of her life is about to begin.
I have to say right off that I felt like I was back in college. Not only did I go to this same school, but I grew up in this area and I have some great memories from my college days. It was easy for me to visualize the location and put myself right in there as one of Alex's roommates.
Speaking of Alex, she is a very likable character. Although she's a little older than her roommates, she still doesn't have the confidence and know-all to go after Lucas herself. Sealy is quite a cocky and controlling guy...at first. I didn't really like him, but he definitely grew on me and I loved the friendship he forms with Alex through this "deal" he makes with her. Lucas, oh, Lucas. He's the kind of guy that every girl dreams of, yet he's not perfect either and is a little infuriating at times. There are other great and not-so-great characters that form a charming cast.
I found myself cringing with embarrassment in places, as well as laughing out loud in others. My heart was even in danger of shattering a time or two. This book had me reading all day long--I couldn't put it down, as I was dying to know how it would all work out. This is such a unique and fun way to re-tell The Little Mermaid and I adored it!
Content: mild romance; mild religious elements (it's specific to the LDS church's culture, but isn't preachy).
